JEC School Visit #1 |
JEC = Jornada Escolar Completa
9 hours per day
Blended Learning
Urban Areas
The first school we visited was located in Chosica. The name of the school was Josefa Carrillo y Albornoz. It was about an hour and a half ride from our hotel to the school. We got to visit a 4° grade secondary science class (15 years old), science labs (biology, chemistry, physics), and a 2° grade primary class (6-7 years old).
The secondary students were shy to speak English or say hi, but the primary school students immediately greeted us and showed us 2 coordinated dances!! π
4° de Secundaria |
2° de Primaria |
COAR School Visit #2 |
COAR = Colegio de Alto Rendimiento
High Achieving Schools
10 hours per day
Residential Modality
The second school we visited was located in HuanpanΓ. It was in the Chaclacayo area still in the Lima region, and about 25 minutes from the first school.
There are 25 COAR schools in Peru, and about 1 in each region. These are fully funded by the government and only students who are in poverty or extreme poverty are accepted here. These schools have more resources and the teachers get paid double than other public schools.
I got to visit a 3° grade secondary math class (15-16 years old). Students were learning Factorization of Polynomials.
3° de Secundaria |
AND then I also got to visit a communications class for 2° grade secondary students (13-14 years old). Students we discussing social issues in Peru.
It was interesting to see the drastic differences between the JEC and COAR schools.
The COAR school had more resources (library, computers, etc.). The JEC school had more outdoor space for the students, but no dining hall.
